The inaugual Kauai Folk Festival will take place at Kauai, HI’s Grove Farm Museum, set for September 28th and 29th, 2019. The festival’s mission is to bring together traditional Hawaiian music and North American roots music with performances from a variety of different artists.Recently, the two-day music and arts event released their musical lineup, with Taj Mahal’s Hula Blues Band and Peter Rowan’s My Aloha Bluegrass Band topping the bill. Kaui Folk Fest will also see musical performances by Tim O’Brien and Jan Fabricus, Johnny Fritz, Blaine Sprouse, Ed Poullard, Reeb Willms & Caleb Clauder, Mike Bub, Paul Lee Kupfer, Roundhouse Ramblers, Kilin Reese, Paul Sato, Lowbiscus, Pine Hearts, and many more. The festival will also host a plethora of Hawaiian artists, including Puka Asing, Sashamon and Uncle Isaac Kamaile Jr., Na’ Opihi, Wally Rita y Los Kauianos, and others.Festival director Matt Morelock explains to Billboard that 19th century royal Hawaiian courts encouraged musical collaborations across cultures and genres, and he hopes the Kauai Folk Festival will showcase the heavy influence Hawaiian music has had on nearly every genre of popular American music.“[Hawaiian King] Kalākaua understood the importance not only of promoting Hawaiian language, culture, and dance abroad, but also the positive influence that global culture could have in Hawaii,” Morelock explained to Billboard. “He hosted parties and carnivals with all kinds of musicians and dancers from all over the world.
