Teen Drugged Driver Was Racing Before Crash, Cops Say

first_imgSign up for our COVID-19 newsletter to stay up-to-date on the latest coronavirus news throughout New York A Brentwood teenager was allegedly high on drugs while racing another teen on the Southern State Parkway before he crashed in West Babylon, leaving himself and his three passengers hospitalized, police said.Khalique Owens was driving a Honda Sol eastbound when he crashed near exit 38 while racing a Hyundai Elantra driven by fellow 18-year-old Richard Serrano of Bay Shore at 2:20 a.m. Friday, according top New York State police.Owens and two passengers, including a woman who suffered a fracture to her spine, were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Islip for treatment of their injuries. A third passenger was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital.Owens and Serrano were charged with unauthorized speed contest and other traffic violations. Owens was additionally charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs and unlawful possession of marijuana.Two other uninvolved drivers, 34-year-old Adrian Resto of Bay Shore and 26-year-old Dagoberto Carballo of Brentwood, were arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated when police said they attempted to evade traffic control efforts while Troopers were investigating the crash scene.Owens, Serrano and Carballo were all issued appearance tickets. Resto will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip.Troopers are continuing the investigation.last_img
